Jermain Defoe has admitted Harry Maguire is making far too many mistakes at the moment after the centre-back had another scorching night during England’s 3-3 draw against Germany on Monday.
The Manchester United captain has struggled for form in recent months and was dropped by Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, but Gareth Southgate continued to support Maguire at international level.
The 29-year-old did not repay that confidence at Wembley, however, as he conceded a penalty for Germany’s first goal when he tripped Jamal Musiala, and was then expropriated in the run-up to their second goal. Defoe was unable to defend Maguire’s mistakes when he judged the goals afterwards.

“You look at the goals and they were avoidable,” Defoe told Channel 4.
Stupid mistakes, you give the ball away and then you give away a penalty. Individual mistakes, and for some reason he always seems to be.”
Maguire’s inclusion in Southgate’s squad for England’s games against Italy and Germany over the past three days has been one of the main talking points of the international break.
The defender’s name was booed as this Monday’s kick-off read, with some fans clearly arguing that he should not be on the team based on his current level of performance.
He was also booed throughout the game, especially when things started to go wrong for England at the back in the second half.
Jermain Defoe thinks Harry Maguire is making far too many ‘avoidable’ mistakes right now
Defoe is aware of the criticism Maguire has received and hopes he can get back to his best.
He has called on Maguire to try and play with more freedom so that he can return to the form in which he shone at the 2018 World Cup and last year’s European Championship when he was named to the Team of the Tournament.
“It’s funny because like I said at the beginning of the show, there’s a lot of negativity around him and you want him to play well because he’s done well in tournaments for England,” added Defoe.
“We’ve seen him in the tournaments, he’s done well to be honest. You just want him to take the handbrake off and just play.”
