Vietnam has attempted to evacuate nearly 400,000 people as Super Typhoon Noru approaches.

Vietnam ordered hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate their homes Tuesday as Super Typhoon Noru swept into the busy city of Danang, with forecasters predicting the storm would be one of the biggest to hit the country.

Nearly half of Vietnam’s airports have been closed, schools and offices in several central provinces have been closed and residents rushed to find shelter before the expected arrival of the typhoon on Wednesday.

After crashing into the Philippines earlier this week, killing six people, Noru is forecast to make landfall before 11 a.m. (0400 GMT) as a super typhoon and then decline to a severe typhoon as it moves inland.

Vietnam’s flood and storm control authority said wind speeds would reach 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour), which is equivalent to Typhoon Xangsane – which struck Danang in 2006 and killed 76 people.

Authorities have urged 400,000 people to leave their homes, including in the popular tourist town of Hoi An, where residents were taken to a primary school.

“I wanted to leave. My house is not very strong. I am afraid that the roof could be blown off if the typhoon hits,” Huynh Mua told AFP, holding a plastic bag full of clothes, a blanket and several packets of instant noodles.

In Danang, Vietnam’s third-largest city, all shops and hotels were closed, while residents will no longer be allowed on the streets from the end of Tuesday.

According to data from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, located in Hawaii, Super Typhoon Noru will be only the sixth major typhoon to hit Vietnam since 1945.

Naru hit the island of Luzon in the Philippines on Sunday and Monday, knocking down trees, cutting power and flooding low-lying communities.

Five rescue workers were killed after being sent to help the flooded residents, while another man died after being hit by a landslide. Officials estimate that about $2.4 million worth of crops were damaged.
