Jiri Prochazka has revealed that he spent three days in the dark without food to better train his mind.

The UFC light-heavyweight champion, who dethroned Glover Teixeira earlier this year, is an avid follower of ‘Bushido’ the Japanese Samurai code.

And he takes a bizarre, often extremely unusual approach to training both mind and body — the latest being sensory deprivation.

He put on the MMA hour: ‘Three days it’s all in darkness, and there you can work with your demons and train whatever you want.

“I don’t want to talk much about it because that’s my personal stuff.

“That’s the greatest pleasure (being in the dark), because you have to get to the point where time ends, and I can’t talk about that, because it’s so, not intense, to me, these things are so personal. .. and holy.

He continued: ‘There is only you and you. No other people. That was the first time I did that without food, so just with water. It is much stronger when you have no food. All processes in your body are much stronger. Your mind works a lot, and you must die here first.

The new champion is the first from the Czech Republic and will be a huge star in the making

“And three days, four days, that’s not much. But I just use that to recognize who I really am, and then I can start training and push to the next level with really being myself, more honest.”

Prochazka will try to defend his title against Teixeira in their rematch on December 10 at UFC 282.

Their first meeting was an epic, which the European fighter won by belated submission after a back-and-forth war.

Despite all of Prochazka’s strange and wonderful ways, they seem to work a treat. He has won his last 13 fights and the last three of them have been in the UFC.

His signature haircut and ancient approach to MMA have captured the interest of fans and another win over the Brazilian will only add to his appeal.
