An American woman living in Sydney has asked Australians when the Christmas season officially starts – and the answers varied.
Sophia Kim, who moved from Los Angeles to NSW in 2020, said the festive season in the US starts after Thanksgiving in late November, but was confused after attending a Christmas party in Australia in October.
In a TikTok clipshe asked Australian viewers when they start celebrating Christmas and was shocked when many pointed out that retailers have already started selling festive decorations.

In a TikTok clip, the expat said the festive season begins after Thanksgiving in late November, but he had attended a Christmas party in Australia in October
“In America, Christmas starts the day after Thanksgiving, which is usually November 26,” the bikini designer said in the clip.
‘But I was at a Christmas party in Australia today so I’m thinking when does the Christmas season start in Australia? Because I think it starts in October.’
Some said holiday parties start the day after Halloween, while others said they’ve already seen some decorations start to go up.

‘In the malls it’s started earlier and earlier every year…around September/October the Christmas decorations start popping up everywhere!!’ said one follower.
“It’s when Santa is in all the malls,” wrote another, while one woman explained that Christmas parties can take place months before and after December.
“Girls look into the shops they are already starting but typically to book places, a lot of business bookings start from October and run until February even!!,” she said.
‘People start Christmas work parties quite early here to get them done. Christmas is so much fun here in Oz, barbecues, pool parties,” said another, adding that the recent bout of wet weather has put a damper on the festivities.
One person said the season begins in mid-November, while another insisted on not celebrating Christmas until December.
“It starts for me on the first of December in my brain and the fact that people have started having their Christmas parties is just too much to handle,” they said.
