She said the officer directly after Johnstone did not catch up to him, and it appeared that the escapee was getting further away.
Barker said two Correctional Service officers were chasing him on foot and she heard a “stop or I shoot” yell several times, “loud and clear,” before a shot went off.

She said she ran in when she heard the shot. CCTV vision of the hospital, played before the jury, showed Barker bringing in patients from outside and calling for help. She told the court that she yelled at the staff to “shoot out there” as she entered the hospital.
“I told everyone to sit down,” she told the court, appearing visibly shocked. Officer A’s attorney Philip Strickland, SC, suggested to her that it was “a very frightening event, terrifying, wasn’t it?”
“It was confrontational,” she responded.
David Allan, one of the guards escorting the nurse to her car, described Johnstone as “fleeing quickly”.
“He was kind of a double shuffle, you might say,” Allan told the court. ‘He didn’t take such full steps. It was more like a quick shuffle.”
Allan said he heard a “fight” before the first shot and a “thud” after the third.
He said on the radio that he needed police help for a critical incident, then went to the site where Johnstone had collapsed, on a slope to a doctor’s office.
Allan said he helped get Johnstone across the road to hospital, where he tried to find a key to remove his handcuffs and ankle cuffs. He said he initially asked the police for a key, which did not work, and was eventually given a key by a corrective service.
