Javier Tebas has said Lionel Messi made a ‘mistake’ by leaving Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021.

Amid deteriorating economic conditions for the Catalan club, Messi left Barcelona after two decades for Paris with a new contract that was not possible.

After signing a first two-year deal with the French club, speculation has increased in recent weeks about Messi’s next move.

Javier Tebas said Lionel Messi made a mistake by leaving Barcelona for free last summer

Asked about the possibility of his return to Spain, Tebas welcomed the potential move but added that he felt Messi himself had made a mistake by leaving on a free transfer last year.

“I don’t know if Messi will have one last show at Barca, that will depend on him. Hopefully he will come back,” Tebas said at the Web Summit in Lisbon.

“It would also be especially good for him to return to Spanish football, especially to the team that has seen him grow.

Speaking at the Web Summit in Lisbon, the La Liga president (pictured) said he hoped Messi would return one day

“I think it was a mistake even for him, in my opinion, to break that marriage, it was a very beneficial long-term alliance for Messi and for Barca itself.”

There has been speculation that Messi, 35, could move to the United States to join David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

However, as the Argentinian is nearing the peak of his ability, with a stellar start to the season with PSG, scoring 12 goals and 14 assists to date in all competitions, it has been suggested that his level may still be somewhere above that of the MLS.

The Argentine has had a great start to the campaign with PSG, with 12 goals in all competitions

Messi himself has been tight-lipped about his future, choosing to focus on what will likely be his last ever World Cup.

It has been reported in France that the Argentine could activate another ‘Argentine clause’ in his contract that would relieve him of his duties at PSG two weeks after the tournament started.

Reporter Gaston Edul claimed the clause – which could be rejected by PSG boss Christoph Galtier – allows the player to prioritize international obligations over those of his club.

Argentina are offering to win their first World Cup since 1986, and have since competed in two finals (1990 and 2014).
