Another officer, Detective Sergeant Andrew Lonergan, told SD, “We’re not saying you hurt him.”
Police, who have focused on several local pedophiles, a grandparents support group and a washing machine repairman in the eight-year investigation, now believe the little boy crashed from a balcony above his death and his body was dumped near bushland. .
William Tyrrell remains missing.
Detectives again conducted a full-scale search of the area they believe William’s body was left behind last November; they also dug up the front yard below the balcony and used Luminol, a technology designed to show bloodstains. No evidence was found during that search.
The police had bugged her at home, tapping her and her husband’s cell phones; harrowing secret tapes played in court are said to have recorded the child screaming “no, please, no” and sobbing as she was allegedly hit by the spoon.
Another secret tape reportedly recorded SD telling her husband that she hit the child with “that wooden spoon” and that the child would “get a huge bump on her leg”.
SD is also charged with two counts of habitual assault and two counts of harassment involving the 10-year-old girl. She remains in court on those charges, having failed to get them fired under mental health legislation earlier this year.
