Two teenagers have been killed after a car participating in a rally in Belgium ran off the road amid slippery conditions and collided with them.
A 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man died around 3.30pm after being hit by the vehicle participating in the Condroz-Huy Rally near the town of Wanze, southeast of Brussels.
A statement on the rally’s website said one participant and another person were taken to hospital but were not in critical condition.
A spokesman for the local prosecutor’s office said a “number” of people had been injured, without specifying how many.
A 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man were killed around 3.30 pm after being hit by the vehicle participating in the Condroz-Huy Rally near the town of Wanze, southeast of Brussels.
A statement on the rally’s website said one participant and another person were taken to hospital but are not in critical condition.
“An expert said the road was slippery at the time” because of the rain, Renaud Xhonneux said.
An alcohol test on the driver and co-driver came back negative, and investigators tried to determine if the two teens were in an area authorized for public access.
The rally statement said organizers and participants were “in mourning” and expressed their condolences to the teens’ relatives.
The rally organizers added that the final leg of the race had been canceled and there would be no trophy presentation at the end of the race.
