WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told CNN she was “very scared” when she was awakened by the Capitol Police who knocked on her door to let her know that her husband had been attacked.

Pelosi, D-Calif., was asleep when Capitol Police knocked repeatedly on the door of her apartment in Washington, D.C., around 5 a.m. on Oct. 28. Paul Pelosi was attacked by a man with a hammer at their San Francisco home and was hospitalized with a skull fracture.

“So I run to the door, and I’m very scared,” Pelosi told “Anderson Cooper 360.” “I see the Capitol Police and they say, ‘We need to come in and talk to you.’”

The interview is scheduled for broadcast Monday at 8 p.m.

Nancy Pelosi described how she was immediately concerned about her children and grandchildren.

“I never thought it would be Paul because, you know, I knew he wouldn’t be out, shall we say,” Pelosi told CNN. “And so they came in. At that point, we didn’t even know where he was.”

Paul Pelosi, 82, was released Thursday from San Francisco General Hospital, where he underwent surgery for a skull fracture and injuries to his right arm and hand.

The suspect, David DePape, 42, has been sentenced to six state charges, including attempted murder, elder abuse and burglary. He pleaded not guilty to the state charges.

DePape also faces federal charges for assaulting a relative of a federal official and attempted kidnapping of a federal official.
