The Senate is deadlocked.
This election, we’ll see who controls the chamber for the rest of Biden’s term.

Control of the US Senate is at stake, as Democrats currently hold the most narrow of majorities with Vice President Kamala Harris acting as a tiebreaking vote on many key votes.

In 2020, Democrats gained control of the Senate for the first time since early 2015. They used the last two years to push through big-ticket legislation such as the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, the Build Back Better Act of 2021, and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

2022 General Embeds

Despite holding the majority, two Senate Democrats — Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema — have prevented Democratic leaders from curbing the Senate filibuster to pass other pieces of legislation over Republicans’ objection, such as voting rights bills and codifying the original abortion protections granted by Roe v. Wade that the Supreme Court overturned in June.

There are 35 seats up for grabs on Election Day — 21 held by Republicans and 14 by Democrats. Six incumbents — five Republicans and one Democrat — announced they would not be running for an additional term, leading to close races in Nevada, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Other battleground states this election season include close races in Wisconsin and Georgia.
