HBO host Bill Maher has admitted he was wrong in predicting big GOP gains in the interim after predicting Democrats would derail their focus on identity politics.
“What about the American people — I mean really, I had no faith and they proved me wrong,” noted the left-wing pundit in his monologue for Friday’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher.
‘Democracy – I think they look at it as the catalyst, you know? They don’t know exactly what it is, but they know it would be bad if it were stolen,” Maher joked.
“But of course, because this is America, we still don’t really know who won!” he added, noting that control of Congress has yet to be determined days after Tuesday’s election.

Republicans are still looking for a slim majority in the US House, with some races still to be decided
Maher, a self-proclaimed “traditional liberal,” had predicted big gains for the GOP ahead of the election, saying last week that “the left has gone super crazy with a lot of things the average American just never voted for.”
On Saturday morning, Republicans still rose to a narrow majority in the US House, with a number of races still to be decided. However, the huge profit that many expected for the party did not materialize.
If Democrats fail to capture the US Senate race in Nevada, which is still too close to mention, control of the Senate could equate to a runoff election in December in Georgia.
In Georgia’s second round, incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, will face GOP challenger Herschel Walker, after neither obtains an outright majority.
“Herschel Walker is very excited,” Maher joked. “He said he wants to make sure he gets a first term, unlike most of his children,” he added, referring to multiple women who claimed the anti-abortion candidate encouraged and paid for their abortions.
Maher also praised the outcome of the US Senate race in Pennsylvania, where Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman, a Democrat, voted Donald Trump’s self-elected Republican candidate, Dr. Mehmet Oz, defeated.
“I see this as a victory of substance over style. He took on Dr. Oz, who’s a very brave, media-savvy heart surgeon — and he lost to a guy who dresses like the airline has lost his luggage,” Maher joked.

Maher also credited Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for his stunning reelection win after the Republican led his challenger Charlie Crist by a margin of 19 points.
Maher joked that DeSantis’ unofficial motto, “Florida is where wake up to die,” “resonated with voters,” and joked, “Of course Florida is where everyone is going to die.”
The comedian praised DeSantis as the new “golden boy of the Republican Party” and joked “Trump finally knows what it feels like to be traded for a younger model.”
In a panel discussion later in the episode, Maher also had words of admiration for DeSantis and attacked Trump.
“Yeah, he knows how to stir up the base. I agree with that. He’s a politician, but he can also be a normal governor,” Maher said of DeSantis as he debated Representative Mo Khanna, a California Democrat.

While Khanna argued that DeSantis is too extreme, Maher took the opposite stance, defending the Republican as a capable governor while acknowledging that he has a flair for political stunts.
‘In other words, after’ [Hurricane Ian], he can stand next to President Biden like a normal governor does and work with him and then send some migrants to Martha’s Vineyard. And that’s a very powerful thing, to have both elements,” Maher said.
The comedian argued that Trump, on the other hand, is now a “loser” dragging the GOP down, an argument some Republicans have also made when assessing the party’s weak performance over the medium term.
“I mean Georgia – how many elections has he screwed up in Georgia now?” Maher said about Trump.
“No one has done as much damage in Georgia since Sherman as he has done to the Republican Party.”
