Paul Mercurio moved audiences in the 90s with his breathtaking dance routines in the classic Australian film Strictly Ballroom.
But now the 59-year-old actor has announced that he wants to reach people in a different way by embarking on a career in Victorian state politics.
The Neighbors star is a Labor candidate in Hastings’ seat in the Mornington Peninsula for the November 2022 state election.

The father of three firmly believes that his years of work experience has given him the necessary skills to enter the political arena.
‘I’ve done everything. As an actor in this country you don’t just act,” he said NCA NewsWire.
‘I did a lot to pay the mortgage and put food on the table. I think the good thing about it is that I have a pretty healthy life experience,” he added.

Although Paul was elected as a councilor for the Mornington Peninsula Shire in 2020, he expressed his displeasure with the role.
He said, “I couldn’t do enough on the council, so I decided to go for the state.”

Paul has been married to his wife Andrea since 1987 and they share three children Emily, Elise and Erin.
