Tilley posted footage of the moment on his Facebook page, writing: “A very scary moment today with a windshield on 275.”
In the clip, Tilley can be seen driving at high speed on the Conrod Straight when his cracked windshield imploded dramatically, engulfing him with debris.
Under the rubble, Tilley kept his composure and sent his 50-year-old Valiant into the pits shortly after.
In the commentary section of the video, Tilley explained that the cracks in the windshield formed just a few laps before the implosion and were not due to an impact of any kind.
He said he recently had another screen that was also cracked for no reason. “I find them all worthless and too flimsy compared to the original,” he wrote.
Tilley was praised by fans who were amazed that he was able to maintain control of the vehicle at top speed despite being under the glass
Tilley noted that there was “glass everywhere” afterwards, with friends and fans praising him for being able to maintain control of the vehicle at top speed.
‘Wow. Very scary. Incredibly well handled under extremely dangerous conditions,” wrote one Facebook user.
‘Excellent car control. Definitely a code brown moment,” said another.
“Well, the windshield made a valiant effort,” a third joked.
Steven Johnson eventually won the event in his Ford Mustang, becoming the first ever driver to win all four Touring Car Masters races in the same weekend.
