Gary Neville blasts Costa Rica after they fail to have a single shot on goal in 7-0 rout by Spain

Gary Neville was baffled by toothless Costa Rica after a 7-0 loss to Spain on Wednesday night.

Costa Rica failed to have a single shot on goal, the first time in a World Cup match since the Central American side drew to score in 1990.

And Neville, a member of the England team defeated by Costa Rica in the 2014 World Cup, criticized: “Costa Rica, the first team in 32 years in a World Cup not to have a shot on goal, to forget about the goal, not to have a shot from door the whole game, that can’t happen.

“Those players have had multiple World Cups, they have had experiences, they knocked us out [England] out of a group, five of those players, in 2014, they were fantastic, with a lot of energy, today there was nothing.

I have no idea what just happened. We know that Spain keeps the ball, they had the most possession in the last Euro Cup with 76%, we know that they play that game within the game, but that is the worst thing about Costa Rica, a team that has a lot of quality and experience in the last eight to 10 years.’

Fellow pundit Graeme Souness was just as scathing as the 69-year-old former Scottish midfielder, stating that he “could have played in the first half”.

“There was no aggression in the defense, no aggression at all, it was too easy,” Souness told ITV.

“It was in the 96th minute when they put in an aggressive tackle, when I say aggressive I mean leaving a Spanish player a bit.

“I would describe it as a passive and pitiful attempt to try to play football

‘For Spain it was a piece of cake, the perfect match. If they had had a team game, a scrimmage, it would have been more competitive than what we saw tonight in Costa Rica.

“He could have played in the first half where Busquets played, there was no one near him, he was receiving the ball and they allowed him to spin, no one was challenging. It was an easy night for Spain.”
