Australian employees have revealed the year-end Christmas bonuses they receive from their bosses, and many are less than impressed with their ‘tight-fisted’ gifts.
Christmas bonuses are a benefit often provided by an employer during the festive season and can take many forms, including extra money, extra days of leave, or a gift in the form of a physical item.
In a Reddit post on Tuesday, a curious worker asked Australians if they will receive a Christmas bonus in 2022 and what would be a “reasonable” amount to expect.
“Funny how much people are getting as a Christmas bonus this year,” they wrote.
‘Do you expect to receive a bonus and, if so, how much do you think is reasonable?’

Some Reddit users revealed that they get a monetary bonus totaling $50 to $4.00 in cash.
‘Our company calls it ‘year-end bonus.’ Apparently everyone at our company makes at least $1k,” wrote one user.
‘I get $1,000 every Christmas from my boss. Plus a mid-year bonus of the same amount and usually another 1-2 sprinkles,” another user added.
‘$1,500. I am a tinker and this is very unusual. I have never received bonuses in any other workplace,’ chimed in a fourth.
“I work at super corporate as an analyst, our annual bonus is paid at Christmas and is usually around $4K gross,” another user added.
Others explained that their bonuses came in the form of gift cards at retailers like Amazon, Myer, JB HiFi, Wish, Coles or Woolworths.
A former Australia Post employee explained: “When I worked for Australia Post, we received a Coles Myer gift card.”
‘Card value was the on-time delivery metric for that year. 97% was the goal and we usually achieved it. So a $97 gift card.
Another user said that for five years he would often receive $500 to $1,000 in cash, but for the past two years he received a $100 JB HiFi coupon.
“My boss normally gives us a $100 gift card and then gives us an extra 3 days of annual vacation,” another user wrote.

Reddit users explained that they receive their bonuses in the form of gift cards at retail stores including Amazon, Myer, JB HiFi, Wish, Coles, or Woolworths (STOCK).
Others revealed that their holiday bonus is often given in cash, ranging from $50 to $4,000 (STOCK).
Many workers took the opportunity to unleash their employers after being forced to take annual leave without monetary compensation.
“My bonus is having a job next year,” wrote one user.

“We have an extra week off, but we have to use the license,” a third party intervened. Barstards just shortened all of our contracts by a week because they decided they didn’t want to pay us anymore.
