A 31-year-old woman found dead in western Sydney had returned to her boyfriend’s home before residents found her with serious injuries on Sunday, police say, as investigators focus their investigation on a person she knows.

“She returned to the site in the early hours of the morning and at some point between then and 2.30pm something happened to this poor young lady,” NSW Police Superintendent John Nelson told reporters in Penrith on Monday afternoon.

He said residents of the Borrowdale Way property in Cranebrook “immediately contacted emergency services” and were assisting police with their investigation.

The woman could not be resuscitated and died on the spot.

“I understand she’s from another part of Sydney staying with friends here,” Nelson said. Out of respect for her family, he did not provide any further details about the victim.

A crime scene was established at the home and local officers are investigating with help from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Division.

“At this stage, they have some focused lines of research,” Nelson said. “We do not believe this is an arbitrary act. Our victim, the woman and someone else may be acquaintances. That is one of the spearheads of our research.”

Asked about a window and if the other person had “possibly been let in”, Nelson replied “Yes”.

“The information we do know is that they are known to each other. There has been no break-in or break-in,” he said. “It’s not a random action.”
