Prescriptions for puberty-blocking drugs among those under 18 doubled between 2017 and 2021, while prescriptions for hormone therapies have seen a similar increase.

The most recent data was collected by Komodo Health, an analytics company that monitors health insurance claims to private and public health care providers in the US such as Medicaid.
There is no national database of complaints from transgender people in the United States.
Figures show there were 1,390 puberty blocker prescriptions for children ages six to 17 in 2021.
This was more than double the 633 claims that were registered in 2017, five years earlier.
Puberty blockers delay the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics, such as facial hair and a deeper voice in boys.
Some doctors argue that this gives patients time to decide if they would like to continue transgender care, before their bodies mature into a sex that does not align with their gender identity.
For hormone therapy, which can trigger secondary sexual characteristics of the desired gender, there were 4,231 requests in 2021 compared to 1,905 in 2017.
Komodo Health also reviewed claims related to gender dysphoria diagnoses.
Claims tripled overall, from 15,172 in 2017 to 42,167 in 2021. The steepest increase was in the past two years, where they increased from 24,847 claims.
States that saw strong increases included New York, where they quadrupled in five years, and California, where they doubled.
Meanwhile, data from Komodo Health showed that major surgeries for 13-17 year olds (breast removal) were also trending up, albeit at a slower pace.
There were 238 in 2019 compared to 282 two years later, or an increase of almost 20 percent.
The data on puberty blockers did not include non-trans people who were prescribed the drug because they started puberty too early.
