A British couple have been found dead of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at their home in Mallorca.

Police were alerted after a person looking after the estate went to check on them because their worried son, who lives in the UK, couldn’t reach them.

He found one of the bodies on a chair and the other in bed. The man was 62 and his partner 56.

The grim discovery was made around 4 p.m. Monday at the estate near Selva at the foot of the Tramuntana Mountains, considered one of the island’s most beautiful towns.

Police were alerted after a person caring for the mansion went to the property because their concerned son, who lives in the UK, was unable to contact them

A Civil Guard source said post-mortems had yet to take place, but investigators were investigating the theory that the deaths may have been related to the faulty combustion of a butane gas stove or chimney in the home. Forensic specialists were still on site on Monday evening.

Police have not yet made an official comment, and officers say the results of the autopsies will be key in determining the direction of the ongoing investigation.

The British couple, whose bodies are believed to have lain undiscovered for at least two days, have not yet been given a full name.

The house where they lived is located between Selva, which has a population of about 4,000, and Manacor.

A Civil Guard source said an autopsy had not yet been performed, but investigators believed it was carbon monoxide poisoning.

Selva mayor Joan Rotger told regional TV station IB3 that the most likely hypothesis being considered was that of poisoning related to gas combustion.

He went to the scene on Monday as soon as he was aware of the news.

There were no immediate reports of any signs of violence in the British couple’s home.

They would have bought the property where they were found dead about a year and a half ago.
