A sixth grader from Waterford Township, Michigan is at Children’s Village after allegedly bringing a gun to school.
According to Waterford Police, another student reported to school officials that the fellow student — an 11-year-old — was carrying a suspected BB gun at Pierce Middle School around 11 a.m. Wednesday. School administrators located the student suspect and found a loaded 9mm handgun in the student’s backpack, police said.
The police were contacted and officers arrived at the school and took the student into custody. After processing with the Waterford Police Department, the child was transported to the Oakland County Children’s Village.
According to the police, the child made no threats to students or staff.
Police Chief Scott Underwood said in a press release that the circumstances surrounding the child’s possession of the gun are still under investigation. Once the investigation is complete, he added, the case will be submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
As further stated in the press release, “The student who notified school officials of the weapon should be commended for their prompt and decisive action, as well as school officials for acting quickly to bring this situation to a safe end.”
