Labour expels Corbyn-appointed official who was hired to improve tensions with the Jewish community

Labor has dropped a woman appointed to improve the party’s relationship with the Jewish people after allegations she was ‘undermining’ the party’s fight against discrimination.

Heather Mendick has been expelled just three years after starting as an advocacy officer who spent 15 months investigating allegations of her breaking party rules.

The allegations followed a number of controversial tweets from the official appointed by Jeremy Corbyn, who is Jewish.

One of Ms. Mendick’s tweets read: “The weaponization of anti-Semitism against the left and how it is used to silence criticism of Israel is well practiced.”

In 2019, she also claimed that there was a “false narrative” within the party about anti-Semitism that “should be challenged from the start.”

A year earlier, she said talks about anti-Semitism in Labor were “neither a rational nor a proportionate response.”

Labor said its behavior “undermines the party’s ability to campaign against racism and/or renders mendacious, inhumane, demonizing or… and/or could reasonably be seen as anti-Semitic actions, stereotypes and sentiments.”

Following the allegations, Ms Mendick posted a 25-minute video to YouTube calling the party a “cesspool” and saying she was “a little relieved” to have been the victim of a witch hunt.

She said, “Being a member in these circumstances is exhausting, and I don’t have to do that anymore. I can’t really do that anymore.

“But you know, those goalposts move all the time. So in a year, who knows. Then if you say there’s a false story about anti-Semitism, maybe – I mean – it makes more sense to define that as a problem, right?’

She also claimed she has 14 days to appeal the charges.

Ms Mendick continued: ‘Ultimately people will have to decide and people will decide what they will and will not do to stay in the Labor Party.

“So the demand to apologize, prostrate myself, go through a period of repentance for my sins—I wasn’t prepared for that.”

Mrs. Mendick told it too the Telegraph“This isn’t just about me. So many people I know who have worked very hard for the PvdA, often giving years of their lives to it, are treated horribly by the party we loved.’

Last year Ms Mendick posted a letter on Twitter that she claimed was sent from Labor outlining her disciplinary offences.

The letter claimed there were 14 instances where Ms Mendick had “reasonably” engaged in “anti-Semitic actions, stereotypes and sentiments”.

It cited her support for Chris Williamson – an MP who said Labor was “too apologetic” about anti-Semitism.

At the time, she tweeted, “I’m Jewish. Chris Williamson is not anti-Semitic. In my opinion, your misuse of the term anti-Semitism complicates the fight against it.’

In response to the letter, she also said, “This one [statements] express widespread political opinions about how anti-Semitism functions, both within the party and in wider society.

There is clear evidence that Jewish members are disproportionately among those investigated, suspended and disbarred for ‘anti-Semitism’. This is not surprising, as the party uses its disciplinary processes to monitor what members can say about Jewish identity and anti-Jewish racism.”

Jeremy Corbyn was suspended from the party two years ago after claiming complaints about anti-Semitism were an ‘exaggeration’ of the truth for political reasons.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission released a report saying the party was “not doing enough to prevent anti-Semitism and could be seen, at worst, as accepting it.”
