The Stan Original Series Black snow premieres on New Year’s Day and all six episodes are now only available to watch on Stan.
Set in a small town in North Queensland, the gripping mystery drama tells the story of 17-year-old Isabel Baker who was murdered in 1995. The crime shook the small town of Ashford and devastated Isabel’s Australian South Sea Islander community.

The case was never solved and the killer never found. But in 2020, the opening of a time capsule reveals a secret that puts cold-case detective James Cormack (Travis Fimmel) on the killer’s trail.
Speaking to 9Entertainment, Alexander England – one of the show’s main cast – revealed why the series is “unlike anything anyone has ever seen”, and is sure to “start conversations” in households across Australia.

Alexander plays Anton Bianchi in the series, who was in love with Isabelle before she was killed. The story follows two timelines: one of a younger cast at the time of her death and one in the present.

“My story is 25 years [after the murder], and we meet these characters again,” he explained. ‘Anton is clearly still affected by that act of violence; obviously losing Isabella still affects him and he’s a bit stunted. He almost never got past that point.
“When we meet him, he’s moved away from someone who has a lot of excitement and a certain amount of naivety about life and where everything is going… We meet someone who’s been hit hard and later has a much more limited worldview.”
He said it was this character complexity that really “pulled him into the role”, adding that he believes the story as a whole “really has something to show”.

“This is a story that teaches me things I didn’t know,” he admitted.
“There is a part of Australia’s history [displayed] too, and it has this Australian South Sea Islander element that is a really fascinating and unique world.
“We also have new faces that people haven’t seen before, bringing all this wealth of life experience and lived emotion to the screen.
“And secondly, I just think it’s really cool that there are those two timelines, and in both timelines you’re moving toward an epiphany.

“I like the format, and I like that we’re falling in love with Isabel in this younger timeline, because it means we care.
“This story is also very important to the Australian South Sea Islander community, so there is a great responsibility there. I am honored to have been invited to be part of it and to do what I can to make this story as truthful as possible. to tell. “
In the trailer, James (Fimmel) can be heard saying, “The biggest challenge in cold cases is figuring out who the people really were at the time.
“It’s important that I get to know Isabel… a lot of time has passed. People’s memories have faded.
“This was not a crime of opportunity. It was personal.”

When asked why everyone should watch the new series, England replied: “We have incredible talent in front of and behind the camera, but this is a distinctly Australian story and it’s a South Sea Islander story.

Black snow recognizes the traditional custodians of the land on which the series is produced, including the Ngaro Gia and Juru people of the Birra Gubba Nation, and the Australian South Sea Islander community and their important place in Queensland’s history.
