Mesut Ozil’s contract with Fenerbahce has been torn apart, according to reports, after he was frozen out of the first team, leaving him as a free agent this summer.
Former Arsenal midfielder Ozil has not played in Turkey’s Super Lig since March 20 after being banned from the squad following an argument over his fitness.
That failure came with interim head coach Ismail Kartal, and there is no turning back for him under new manager Jorge Jesus, who has left him out of his roster.
NTVspor have claimed that Ozil has not been ‘pardoned’ after his troubles from the previous campaign, with the superstar missing their pre-season sessions.
However, the same outlet has added that his departure is by mutual agreement.
Ozil played 36 games for Fenerbahçe, scoring nine times and providing three assists.
The 33-year-old had left Arsenal in January 2021 to make the move to Turkey, but his spell faded and resulted in him only training after being sidelined.
Earlier this summer, Ozil insisted he still wants to ‘contribute’ to the club, despite uncertainty about his future. He also unfollowed them on social media.
Boss Jesus said the creative spark would no longer be at his side, and the revelation today that he has walked away will come as no surprise to supporters.
However, the playmaker is said to want to keep his career alive by staying in Turkey, with reports indicating he is in contact with Medipol Basaksehir.
More to follow.
