HALF MOON BAY, Calif. – Chunli Zhao, a 66-year-old farmworker, admitted to carrying out the fatal shootings of seven of his coworkers at two mushroom farms in Half Moon Bay during a jailhouse interview.
Zhao told KNTV that he had been bullied and subjected to long working hours on the farms, and that his complaints were ignored.
Zhao entered one farm where he worked, killed four people and seriously injured another, then went to another farm where he previously worked and killed three more people.
He said he had been living in the US for 11 years, had a green card and lived with his wife in Half Moon Bay, and has a 40-year-old daughter in China.
Zhao also admitted to buying the firearm used in the killings in 2021 and was planning to turn himself in to authorities when he was spotted and arrested by deputies on Monday.
He added he had no problem during the process of purchasing the gun.
