Sony says more than 30 PS VR2 games will be released during the initial launch window.

Sony will launch the PlayStation VR2 on February 22, one year after it was announced at CES 2022. PS VR2 costs $550 and preorders are still available through Sony’s PlayStation Direct store.

PlayStation VR2 requires a PS5 console to play, and it needs a wired USB-C connection while in use. The virtual reality headset comes with two wireless PS VR2 Sense controllers and a pair of headphones. A controller charging station is being sold separately for $50.

The PS VR2 is a pricey addition to a console that already costs up to $500 on its own, but it does boast some of the most impressive specs we’ve seen for a VR headset. To help you decide whether the PS VR2 is a good fit for your needs, we’ve broken down all of the device’s key features and games, along with details on how to preorder it.

PS VR2 features

The PlayStation VR2 carries over many features found on the original model released in 2016, while offering a few key upgrades and new options.

Like the original headset, the VR2 must be wired to a PS5 for use, but it does have its own built-in motion and eye tracking without an external sensor or camera. The original PlayStation VR required an external camera for motion detection.

PS VR2 will also now provide a “see-through view” to let players check their surroundings without taking off the headset, and players can set the boundaries for their play area using the headset’s cameras.

Visuals on PS VR2 will also benefit from a higher resolution OLED display that supports 4K and high dynamic range (HDR) contrast. The display will operate with a 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rate for a smooth picture.

PS VR2 will support PlayStation’s 3D audio technology for spatial sound, and the headset features a built-in mic and a headphone port.

The PS VR2 Sense controller will have adaptive triggers with adjustable sensitivity and haptic feedback, just like the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller. The headset will also have its own haptic feedback.

How to preorder PS VR2

PS VR2 preorders began on November 15, and are still available.

To get the PlayStation VR2 at launch, you’ll need to preorder it from Sony via the online PlayStation store. Preorders are now available but are limited to one per household. Customers who preorder now will receive their PS VR2 between February 22 and 28.

The PlayStation VR2 base package costs $550 and includes the headset, two wireless PS VR2 sense controllers, and a pair of headphones. A bundle with a voucher code to redeem a digital copy of Horizon: Call of the Mountain is available for $600. A charging station for the PSVR2 Sense controllers is also sold separately for $50.

How does the PS VR2 price compare to competing VR headsets?

At $550, the PS VR2 actually costs more than the PS5 console itself, and it’s significantly more expensive than the $400 Meta Quest 2, the most popular VR headset currently on the market. The Quest 2 also works as a standalone device, while the PS VR2 requires a PS5 to work, which costs an extra $400-$500.

Meta does offer a more expensive $1,500 headset, the Meta Quest Pro, but it’s being marketed as a device for working professionals rather than a gaming platform. That said, other VR headset competitors designed to pair with PCs cost way more than PS VR2, like the $1,500 Valve Index and the $750 Vive Cosmos Elite, both of which require external sensors that PS VR2 doesn’t need.

While it’s expensive, PS VR2 is designed to deliver some of the best performance available in the VR space, as well as several PlayStation-exclusive titles built for VR.

What games are coming to PS VR2?

More than 30 games have been announced for release during the PS VR2 launch window, which runs February 22 through the end of March. The lineup includes full VR updates to Resident Evil Village and Gran Turismo 7, which will be available at no extra cost for players who own the standard versions of those games.
