A 17-year-old student driver was arrested on Tuesday evening after a collision on a major highway.
Emergency services were called to Stuart Highway in Berrimah, Darwin, around 7:45 PM after a driver mowed down a woman and then drove away.
All inbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours, with the woman taken to hospital in critical condition, fighting for her life.

Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit arrested the 17-year-old boy a short time later. He is in jail and will be formally charged on Wednesday.
Detective Sergeant Corey Borton said witnesses were able to provide details about the vehicle that led to the arrest in nearby Jingili.
“The vehicle had damage consistent with the crash and a 17-year-old student driver was arrested at the scene,” Detective Sergeant Borton said.
“Anyone involved in an accident has a legal obligation to stop and provide assistance. Thanks to the other motorists who did the right thing; your information enabled us to make a quick arrest.”
