The “Rocky” franchise has been thrilling audiences since 1976. The sports drama series has grown to feature nine films, including six in the original Rocky Balboa storyline and three spinoffs about Adonis Creed.
The first six movies tell the story of Philadelphia boxer Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone, who beats the odds to become one of the greatest fighters in the world. The franchise was then revamped in 2015’s “Creed” with a new underdog: Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky’s former opponent and mentor Apollo Creed.
In the first two “Creed” movies, Adonis sets out to become the heavyweight champion of the world with Rocky’s guidance and training. The latest movie in the series, “Creed III,” continues Adonis’ story, but is missing Rocky Balboa himself. Sylvester Stallone decided not to return for the ninth film, making “Creed III” the first “Rocky” movie without the iconic character.

While there’s no word on whether “Rocky VII” will happen, Michael B. Jordan has noted his interest in making “Creed IV.” Despite not appearing in “Creed III,” Sylvester Stallone produced the film, suggesting he’s not completely done with the franchise. If Stallone agrees with the story direction, then it’s possible that he could return as Rocky Balboa in the future.
