Cleveland – According to the company, a train conductor employed by Norfolk Southern was fatally hit by a dump truck at a steel facility in Ohio early on Tuesday morning. This is the latest in a series of incidents involving the railway, including two train derailments, one of which involved hazardous chemicals, in East Palestine, Ohio.
On the day of the incident, Louis Shuster, aged 46, was present at the Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. steel facility at approximately 1:30 a.m.
A spokesperson for the Cleveland Police reported that a truck loaded with limestone collided with the first train car’s front left side, and Shuster was outside the train when he was hit. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
“Norfolk Southern has been in touch with the conductor’s family and will do all it can to support them and his colleagues,” the company said in a statement. “We are grieving the loss of a colleague today. Our hearts go out to his loved ones during this extremely difficult time.”
The National Transportation Safety Board announced on Twitter on Tuesday that it is investigating the conductor’s death.
