‘Please, I Don’t Want To Die.’ Police Body-Cam Video Captures Fatal Shooting Inside Holiday Inn Express<!-- wp:html --><p>Elk Grove, California<strong> (EGPD)</strong> — On February 21, 2023, around 10:32 p.m., officers had responded to a carjacking report where the suspect, who was known to the victim and according to witnesses believed to be under the influence of a controlled substance, brandished a firearm, threatened suicide, and drove away in the victim’s car. At around 11:39 p.m., officers responded to the Holiday Inn Express (9175 W. Stockton Boulevard) regarding a disturbance between an adult male and a hotel employee. When the officers arrived, they recognized and confirmed the stolen vehicle, which was parked and unoccupied, from the earlier call.</p> <p>The officers encountered the suspect, 40-year-old Booker Pannell, in the hotel lobby, armed with a handgun. Pannell refused to comply with the officers’ repeated commands and an officer deployed their Taser, which was ineffective.
