A teenage boy has died in hospital after an electric scooter accident on a suburban sidewalk in Logan, south of Brisbane.

The 15-year-old hit his head and was rushed to hospital after falling off the e-scooter on Basalt Drive in Yarrabilba at about 8:30 a.m. last Tuesday.

He died on Sunday at Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, after sustaining critical injuries.

Witnesses tried to resuscitate the boy while they waited for the ambulance.

The accident happened near Yarrabiliba State Secondary College, where the 15-year-old was a student.

He was rushed to hospital in Brisbane where he had been lying until Sunday when he died tragically.

The area’s forensic crash unit investigates the scene and prepares a report for the coroner.

Local police are asking anyone who has footage of the devastating crash to come forward.

The incident follows a move by the state government to improve rider safety through stricter regulations for e-scooters.

Transport Secretary Mark Bailey said last month the government would put speed limits on some sidewalks, mandate warning devices and increase penalties for risky behaviour.

The new regulations should be introduced by the end of 2022.

Earlier this year, the government announced that the speed on sidewalks would be halved to 12 km/h.

Mr Bailey said it was hard to ignore the popularity of e-scooters and they weren’t going anywhere as a transportation option.
