Australian babies and young children may soon be eligible for protection from COVID-19 after the drug regulatory agency has tentatively approved a vaccine.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration has tentatively approved the Moderna vaccine for children from six months to six years old.
It is the first time a vaccine for this age group has been tentatively approved in Australia.
A pediatric dose of the vaccine, known as SPIKEVAX, would involve two injections, 28 days apart.
The TGA considered data from clinical trials in Canada and the United States, involving more than 6,000 participants, ages six months to six years.
The study found that the immune response to the vaccine in children was similar to that seen in young adults ages 18 to 25 and had similar levels of safety.

In a statement, the regulator said preliminary approval was the first step and the decision indicates “that the vaccine meets high standards of safety, quality and efficacy.”
The Australian immunization advisory group, ATAGI, will now review regulatory approval and advise the government on whether children in this age group should be eligible.
