Experts recommend cleaning our bedding once or twice a week to avoid the buildup of dirty skin cells, sweat and other dirt.
But one woman horrified television viewers when she admitted that she never washed her own bed.
Cornelia Bailey, who made this revelation while appearing on Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners in 2013, lives in a 17th-century Grade I listed mansion in Flintshire, North Wales.
She bought the 10-bedroom Jacobean mansion, built in 1610, for £70,000 in 1985. Dedicated to preserving the historic house, she moved there from London after the breakdown of a relationship with a man she described as ‘the love (of her life’).
At the time of her move in, the property was a derelict shell, which led her to spend tens of thousands of pounds to keep the property standing.

However, her funds have since dried up, and she is forced to live off her small pension, which she supplemented by hosting piercing evenings at her house.
Since living in the mansion, the whole place has become increasingly dirty, Thanks to her only cleaning once or twice the whole time she lived there.
“200 years ago, 20 or 30 people took care of the house,” said Cornelia. “Now there’s just me and the cat.”
She admitted that she hadn’t bathed in two or three years, because the boiler had broken and she couldn’t afford hot water, but said, ‘In the eighteenth century people didn’t bathe all the time so I just lived. in another era.
However, the real horror, when it came to cleanliness or lack thereof, was located in the bedroom.
Speaking with show hosts Hayley and Dan, retired antiques dealer Cornelia opens up about her bed.
She admitted that she never washed it, but thought her mattress was 100 years old.
Cleaning obsessives Hayley and Dan are horrified at the admission, as well as at the general filth of Cornelia’s Place-Tug house.
It also revealed that her mattress – which was never cleaned – was probably around 100 years old.
“Cornelia, when was the bed last washed?” said Hayley, examining the bedroom.
Cornelia replied, “Never.”
Hailey continued: ‘It was never washed? What about the mattress? Do you clean mattresses?
Dan added, “How old is the mattress?”
It could be 100 years old, said Cornelia, or something. You know, that’s the way people lived years ago – and I still live that way.
Her desire to live as people did 100 years ago extended beyond her rank, which could be difficult for Hayley and Dan.
Cornelia said they were only allowed to use water and a sponge to clean the house—no modern cleaning products.
When he warns Hayley that this will not kill the bacteria, Cornelia replies, “Bacteria can live here, and I couldn’t care less.”
In a 2020 YouTube video reflecting on the episode, Hayley admitted that this restriction worried her.

“That was my first hitch,” she said, “and immediately I had the feeling that, ‘This incline is going to go downhill really, really fast.
“Because I was thinking things like, ‘How am I going to clean these toilets?’” What am i going to use to clean the sink drains and put out the drains and stuff? “.
However, the cleaning work is completed using water with a small amount of washing-up liquid.
While Cornelia seemed reasonably happy with the cleaning job, she admitted that she had no intention of using the pristine bathroom now.
She still lives in Plas Teg, which is a private family home and not open to the public. Updates to the home, which is undergoing structural repairs, can be found on Instagram.
