Miami city leaders convened to essentially cancel spring break next year after celebrating the holiday period saw two people shot dead over the course of 72 hours.
During a committee meeting Monday, Mayor Dan Gelber voiced his strong opposition to the Spring Breakers coming to Miami Beach. Plans discussed included closing liquor stores, installing metal detectors, and placing tickets for the next year.

The second shooting occurred at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday on Ocean Drive in South Beach, according to Miami Beach Police. Police said on Twitter that a man was shot and later died in hospital. Officers chased a suspect on foot.
Their names were not released and the suspected gunmen in both shootings were arrested.
Gelber said during a committee meeting Monday that he wants to make Miami Beach a less desirable destination for spring break parties.
This year, police from various South Florida agencies have found it difficult to keep crowds in check.
During Monday’s meeting, Gelber said, “We’re doing everything we can to tell the world we don’t want you here.”

Past violence and pandemonium has led them to expect it to continue into future spring break unless they take action to prevent it, Gelber and city officials said.
“This is not an all-inclusive resort where people can do whatever they want,” Gelber said. “We are definitely not Las Vegas or New Orleans.”
Miami Beach officials have voted to curfew South Beach and close liquor sales in early March, although a final decision on the liquor drive has yet to be made.
On Monday, Miami Beach police released citywide numbers between February 27 and March 27, which include peak spring break time.
A total of 488 arrests were made, more than half of which were due to criminal arrests.

Miami Beach officials have imposed a curfew, effective Sunday night, March 19.
The city said in a news release that two separate shootings Friday evening and early Sunday that left two people dead and “extremely large and undisciplined crowds” led to the decision.
The press release said the curfew will be from 11:59 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday, with an additional curfew from Thursday through Monday, March 27.
Curfew was basically for South Beach, the Spring Breakers’ most popular party location.
