Sen. Josh Hawley is asking the FBI to open a hate crime investigation into the Nashville Christian school shooting as Sen. Rick Scott said the shooters should face an “automatic death penalty” after a convert shooter killed six people on Monday.
Meanwhile, the White House is charting a different course — President Biden insists Congress needs to take action on an assault weapons ban after the shooter was discovered carrying semi-automatic rifles.

Scott was governor at the time of the Parkland high school shooting that killed 17 people in 2018. This gunman was sentenced to life in prison.

Senator Rick Scott said shooters should “automatically face the death penalty” after a mutant shooter killed six people on Monday.

Hawley, R-Missouri, wrote in the letter: “Police reported that the attack here was ‘targeted’ — targeted, meaning against Christians.
He continued, “The full resources of the federal government must be used to determine how this crime occurred, and who may have influenced the deranged shooter to carry out these horrific crimes.”
28-year-old Audrey Hill shooter opened fire at Covenant School, killing Evelyn Diekhaus, Haley Scruggs and William Kenny, 9, Cynthia Beck, 61, Kathryn Consey, 60, and 61-year-old Mike Hill. Konsi was the principal of the school at Covenant, according to the school’s website.
Nashville Police Chief John Drake said Hill, a graduate of the small private Christian school, carefully planned the attack and wrote a statement.

During a search of the Hill home, Drake said, he recovered the manifest and map. He said his team was still “reviewing” the writings and gave no details.
“There is some belief that there is some resentment about having to go to that school,” Drake told NBC News’s Lester Holt Monday night. You don’t have all the details on that yet and that’s why this incident happened.
Police said Hill was armed with at least two assault weapons and a handgun at the time of the attack.
Asked if he would describe the shooting as a “target attack,” Drake said, “There’s a theory to that.”
Hale is a biological woman who has used male pronouns on social media.
Police said Hill had no police record or record of mental health problems and that they were in contact with the suspect’s father.
And while Congress took bipartisan action on gun control last year, the White House insists there is still more to be done.
GOP Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who helped broker the most comprehensive gun legislation in years in the last Congress, said there was little appetite to do more legislatively in the wake of more shootings.
“I would say we went as far as we could go unless someone specified an area that we hadn’t covered,” Cornyn said. He was specifically asked about taking additional steps on background checks for gun purchasers.
