Choice consumer experts name the best and worst supermarket toilet paper for price and softness

Experts have tested toilet paper to find out the best and worst based on performance and value for money.

option Consumer experts have crowned Quilton’s Toilet Tissue Gold Four-ply Softness and 25 Percent Plus Size Toilet Paper in Gold the number one common on supermarket shelves.

Aldi’s Confidence Extra Soft Toilet Tissue was named a budget best buy while the title for softest recycled toilet paper went to Coles’ So Soft and Strong 100 percent recycled toilet tissue.

Shoppers will want to pass up the Oobamboo Bamboo Unbleached toilet paper because it was the worst performing paper by a long time.

They also settled the long-running debate over whether you should hang your toilet paper over or under by determining the correct way.

In the CHOICE Lab, experts tested one, two, three, and four types of toys to reveal that they are soft, can tear easily when punched, are strong and can resist punctures, and will fall apart quickly.

Quilton was by far the best performing toilet paper brand in the CHOICE tests as it dominated the leaderboard by securing seven top ten spots.

The King Size Quilton Four-Ply Softer Toilet Paper and King Size Quilton Toilet Paper 25 percent softer than the King Size Four-Ply Gold toilet paper received the highest score at 85 percent overall.

Both scored 86 percent in a test for looseness and 90 percent for ductility, but shoppers will have to pay extra for a higher-quality treat.

Of all the toilet papers CHOICE tested, the two best performers were among the most expensive tissues at between 61 cents and 63 cents per 100 sheets.

For the best bang for your buck, Choice experts said to go with Confidence Three-Layer Extra Soft Toilet Tissue from Aldi with an overall score of 82 percent and a fourth-place ranking.

At 22 cents per 100 sheets, it wasn’t the cheapest of the products tested, but it was recommended ahead of lower-priced papers because it did well on the puncture test that measures how likely it is that your finger will break the paper.

In third place was the Coles So Soft and Strong Tri-Ply Embossed White which also costs 22 cents per 100 sheets but was not recommended by CHOICE experts for its poor rating in a punch test.

Although it didn’t make the top ten, Coles So Soft and Strong 100% Recycled Toilet Tissue Three-Ply was named the softest recycled toilet paper.

“Toilet paper that’s kind to the planet may not be kind to your behind,” said CHOICE expert Matt Shen because recycled tissue isn’t known for its quality or softness.

However, Coles recycled toilet paper only scored points as well as premium products for softness earning 80 percent softness but at half the price at 28 cents per 100 sheets.

Oobamboo Bamboo Unbleached 3-ply toilet rolls had the lowest rating, at 43 percent.

Oobamboo Bamboo Sheet scored a sad 0 percent in a disintegration test which means it won’t fall apart easily after being rinsed.

At 56 cents per 100 sheets of paper, it was one of the most expensive papers tested and was rated only 55 percent softer.

The other two products at the bottom of the list are Kleenex Toilet Tissue Double Length with 62 percent CleanRipple and Naturale 100 percent recycled Three-Layer Softness 65 percent.

While they fared well on softness of 90 percent and 80 percent, respectively, their ratings plummeted due to a poor disintegration test score.

CHOICE experts also found a definitive answer to the age-old question: Are you supposed to hang toilet paper above or below.

They cite perforated toilet paper inventor Sam Wheeler who drew a diagram of his idea in 1891 showing the roll hanging.
