Authorities on Tuesday said a 16-month-old boy lost his life after being shot by his five-year-old sibling at an apartment in northwestern Indiana.
The Tippecanoe County Coroner, Carrie Costello, confirmed the shooting killed Isiah Johnson.
In a news release, the Lafayette Police Department stated that detectives had determined that the five-year-old sibling gained access to a weapon inside the apartment and accidentally shot the younger child. The shooting occurred at approximately 3 p.m. at the Romney Meadows apartment complex in Lafayette.
Lafayette Police Lt. Matt Gard stated that the call reporting a child not breathing did not come from someone inside the apartment when the shot was fired.
First responders arrived on the scene but did not perform resuscitation, Gard said.
Investigators interviewed the adult and the two children who were present at the apartment, but no arrests have been made thus far.
The investigation is ongoing.
