Late on Tuesday, officials reported that an officer in Alabama had been killed and another was in critical condition after they were shot by a suspect who barricaded himself inside an apartment.

The officers were responding to a domestic violence attack on a woman in Huntsville when they were ambushed by the suspect, who had already shot and wounded the woman.

The officers were taken to the hospital, where one of them, Garrett Crumby,  passed away. Crumby was a three-year veteran of the Huntsville Police Department.

The other officer, Albert Morin, underwent surgery and is currently in critical condition.

The suspect, who was also injured, has been taken into police custody. He was identified as Juan Robert Laws.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall expressed his condolences and emphasized the bravery of Crumby, who ran towards danger to help a female victim and her two small children.

The injured woman was also taken to the hospital, but her injuries were non-life threatening.

“This is a devastating loss for the our department, the Huntsville community and the State of Alabama,” HPD Chief Kirk Giles said. “We send our heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family as they mourn their loved one who made the ultimate sacrifice. As we grieve with our fallen officer’s family, we have another officer fighting for his life. Please keep all our officers and the entire department in your prayers.”

“This is a painful night for the City of Huntsville and for our police family,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “We are heartbroken. Words cannot express our loss.
