An NHS doctor has been suspended for six months after repeatedly making ‘pork sausage’ comments to a Muslim colleague.
Dr Kolathur Eshwari was accused of insulting an unidentified female colleague from Pakistan, referred to only as Dr A, which amounted to a “racist attack”.
The paramedic, who is from India, repeatedly muttered phrases to Dr. A about pork, which Muslims do not eat, and also told her not to fill the kettle with “dirty water”.
The incidents occurred while they were staying in accommodation provided by the Wye Valley NHS Trust in November 2019, when they both started working at Hereford County Hospital.
The Medical Practitioners Tribunal ruled that Dr Eshwari’s behavior was “deplorable” and amounted to “serious” misconduct and suspended her for six months.

Dr. A said she tried to introduce herself to Dr. Eshwari, who refused to give her name before muttering “pork sausage” under her breath.
She said that Dr. Eshwari then grabbed a kettle that Dr. A had filled with mineral water, and threw it into the sink saying “Don’t make that kettle dirty with your dirty water”.
Dr. A said she went back to her room, but heard Dr. Eshwari keep repeating “pork sausage” in the corridor.
She said she was “shocked and at a loss for words” and that Dr. Eshwari kept humming the words “Porky’s Sausage” every time she entered the kitchen and living room.
Dr. A said that she is a Pakistani Muslim, and that her country’s poor relationship with India has led to some Indians calling the country “Purquistan” and the Pakistani people “Pork”, because Muslims do not eat meat.
She said: Dr. Eshwari’s comments felt like a racist attack, and thus I felt that it would be difficult for me to have a good relationship with Dr. Eshwari.
“She stays in the kitchen and common room most of the time, and when I go in there, she starts humming that word and making faces.”
The General Medical Council, which sets standards for doctors in the UK, said Dr Eshwari’s actions were likely to cause offense, and that it showed hostility on the grounds of Dr A’s race or religion.
None of the allegations were admitted by Dr. Eshwari but they were substantiated by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal on March 2.
Dr. Eshwari was suspended for six months from the register after the committee found her to be poorly fit to practice due to misconduct.
During the hearing, Dr. Eshwari said that she neither knows nor is interested in knowing where Dr. A. has come from.
I unreservedly apologized for any “misconception” that Dr. A might have had.
Dr. Eshwari said she discarded the kettle water for health and safety reasons, due to concerns that it came from a half-empty bottle.
She also claimed that she was looking for hot dogs in the fridge at the time and muttered to herself, “Where’s the hot dogs”.
The court found that Dr. Eshwari’s actions could cause offense, and showed that she showed hostility towards Dr. A on the basis of her race or religion.
They said, ‘The court decided that Dr. Eshwari’s misconduct was serious.
Any member of the public, who is aware of the full facts of the case, would be concerned that the doctor acted the way Dr. Eshwari did.
Further, the Court held that a professional colleague would find Dr. Eshwari’s actions deplorable.
