Is MDMA legal in Australia? Jana Hawking’s friends take medication to fix their marriage problems

It takes a lot of shock, but there really is a wild “cure” that couples turn to to fix their marriage, and I am personally shocked. It’s highly illegal, highly questionable, and if I’m being honest, I bet you’re right, but the results don’t seem to lie.

It caught my eye last night at dinner when a couple in a friendship group revealed the extreme way they saved their marriage from the brink of divorce: taking MDMA together.

Like many of us, they came out of the pandemic very pessimistic and, in their own words, “absolutely hate each other.” The wife even said his noisy nose breathing was enough to send her into a frenzy.

They’ve tried marriage counseling, but their busy schedules and high mortgage fees don’t afford them the “luxury” of attending a weekly session.

Quite simply…it worked. Now before I tell you their story, I must really state that I do not condone this practice. Lord knows what goes into street drugs. Watch any report of illegal drugs and it will freak you out. However, here’s how it was done…

They decide to hire a babysitter for the night, treat themselves to a very luxurious hotel stay, find a drug dealer who supplied them with this highly illegal substance and lock themselves in the place for one night.

A little nervous, considering they hadn’t touched “party dope” since they were at university 15 years ago, they worried they’d taken things too far. There were two parents with solid jobs, a mortgage, two kids, and literally a white picket fence. What were they doing on a Saturday night holed up in a hotel with a bottle of champagne and some first class medicine?

After a brief discussion about whether they should back off, they decide to throw caution to the wind and give their marriage one last push. They both agreed that if this didn’t work, they would part ways knowing that they had given him their best. Sheesh is talking about a weekend or a break!

They squirted champagne, nervously poured a glass, downed it, poured another, and then felt the courage to take the next step. They crushed the crystals into a fine powder, rolled a banknote, and each took a turn sniffing a streak of the fine powder down their noses.

They were so nervous that they decided to take a soothing hot bath and wait for the effect to work. After a few minutes they were worried they hadn’t taken enough, but after a short while they felt like rambunctious teenagers.

Then they spent the next two hours talking and talking and talking. They noticed that they weren’t yelling at each other, but were really listening to what each other had to say. Cry together, hold hands, and make love.

Previously when they tried to have a discussion about the appalling state of their marriage, she would find herself angry and loud, and he would shut down and say nothing. They were constantly chasing their heads and never found a solution. However, on this drug, there was no screaming, no shutting down, no screaming and raving. Just talk and listen. proper listening.

And it turns out the Therapeutic Goods Association has been hearing about the positive effects of this substance, too, because in February the TGA announced that MDMA and psilocybin — the active ingredient in magic mushrooms — would be reclassified in July to allow them to be. It is prescribed by psychiatrists to treat patients with post-traumatic stress disorder and treatment-resistant depression.

So before anyone with a failed marriage gets too excited, no, it’s not going to be a legal use for relationship issues, but I find it great that our medical community is looking at this ‘party drug’ as something that can help a tormented mind. It was clearly made in a proper clean lab, with no added harm. Whatever they discover next…
