Happy birthday Coco! Europe’s oldest female chimpanzee turns 58 at Warwickshire Zoo – and celebrates with ‘boughs and flowers full of oats’

Europe’s oldest female chimpanzee celebrated her 58th birthday yesterday – and enjoyed her day in the sun with ice cubes flavored with delicious fruit tea and her favorite vegetable selection.
Twycross Zoo in Warwickshire wrote a sensational birthday message on social media in honor of its ‘special lady’ as it shared a slew of pictures of the monkey over the years.
Koko, a mother of six with more than 15 grandchildren, has been living at the zoo for 54 years.
“Part of our history, since 1969 has called the Twycross Zoo home and has been an amazing ambassador for its species,” Instagram another gushed.
She is also a great-grandmother to three chimpanzees, including the zoo’s youngest species – called Tully, who is 16 years old.

And Coco’s family legacy seems to carry on, as her son Jumbo is also the dominant male chimp in Twicross.
She had six children who had 19 children in total, was a vital part in breeding programs and is a beloved resident by zoo staff.
“We celebrated Coco’s 58th birthday all weekend,” said Amanda Addison, Team Animal Director for Great Apes.
“And provide her with some of her favorite treats to enjoy with the rest of the chimps to mark the occasion.”
Branches full of oats and blossoms were also on the festive menu as she and the other chimps enjoyed the day together.
Chimpanzees are currently at risk of extinction in the wild due to hunting and the illegal bushmeat and pet trade.
Chimpanzee Eden is located at Twycross Zoo which opened in 2018 and aims to provide a modern, modern habitat for the species and is home to all 14 of the zoo’s chimpanzees.
The world’s oldest chimpanzee, Little Mama, was believed to have reached the age of 80 before her death in the United States.

Meanwhile, Joao – a male South African chimpanzee – is currently the oldest living species in the world with an estimated lifespan of between 73 and 78 years.
There are four living classifications of great apes or ‘Hominidae’ – Orangutan, Gorilla, Pan (consisting of chimpanzees and bonobos) and Homo, of which only modern humans survive.
Chimpanzees and bonobos each share 98.7 percent of their DNA with humans — making the two species our closest living relatives.
Like us, chimpanzees are very social animals, they take care of their offspring for years and can live to be over 50 years old.
Female chimpanzees spend most of their time with their young or with other females, although they live in societies dominated by adult males.
