In her new documentary, Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, the actress said director Franco Zeffirelli’s behavior made her feel so uncomfortable that she had to ‘detach’ herself for the rest of the production.
She also recounted the experience of working on The Blue Lagoon—the story of a boy and girl getting sexually awakened—when she was 14, and criticized the production team for trying to make a “realistic rendering” of the film by focusing too hard. on her sexuality.

On the set of Endless Love, Shields said Zeffirelli was equally exploitative about her sexuality.
“The physicality and exploration of sexuality felt very dangerous to me,” she said. “I didn’t trust the director to create a safe environment for me.”
She said that culminated in shooting the scene where her character loses her virginity — a sex scene she was already uncomfortable shooting — when Zeffirelli violently twisted her toe to force her to make a face looking like “I had a feeling, kind of, I guess, ecstasy.

Although only 14 years old while filming The Blue Lagoon, Shields was no stranger to sex having played a prostitute in the 1978 movie Pretty Baby at just 11 years old. Prior to that, she was also photographed nude in a Playboy publication at the age of only 10.
By the time she got to the set of Blue Lagoon — a film famous for its rampant nudity — Shields recalled how determined director Randal Kleiser was to exploit that sexualized image by making her look like someone who was going through a sexual awakening at the same time as the character she portrayed.
