Insider looked at domestic migration data from the Census Bureau to see how people have recently moved around the US.
The below map shows that many counties within Florida had more people move in from somewhere else in the US than move out.
A lot of California counties had more people moving out to somewhere else in the US than in from another county.
Americans are flocking to Texas.
Four Texas counties were among the top 10 large US counties that saw the greatest positive net domestic migration from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022, per 1,000 residents. That included Rockwall County, with net domestic migration of 47.6 per 1,000 residents.
The Census Bureau recently published county and county equivalent estimates for net domestic migration from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022. Positive net domestic migration means more people were moving to the county or county equivalent from somewhere else in the US than out to somewhere else in the country — as was the case for Rockwall County in Texas.
“Patterns of domestic migration in 2022 were notably different than 2021,” a news release from the Census Bureau stated. “During the height of the pandemic, many small counties experienced higher levels of domestic migration, while many large counties saw lower levels of domestic migration.”
“This pattern has reversed between 2021 and 2022, where many of the small counties that experienced increases in domestic migration saw that pattern slow down,” the press release added. “In the meantime, many large counties, particularly in the South and West, observed an uptick in domestic migration.”
Florida, Utah, and Washington were among the states that had more counties with positive net domestic migration than negative. Louisiana, Illinois, and California saw more counties with negative values than counties with positive values.
“All counties in Delaware, Maine and New Hampshire had positive net domestic migration,” the news release published on the Census Bureau stated.
Insider looked at what net domestic migration per 1,000 residents in 2022 looked like for counties and county equivalents.
The following map shows what net domestic migration per 1,000 people looked like for counties or county equivalents in every state except Connecticut. You can hover over the different places on the map to see the population estimate for July 1, 2022, and the estimate for net domestic migration per 1,000 residents.
Insider also looked at what counties with at least 20,000 people as of July 1 in both 2021 and 2022 had the largest postive net domestic migration per 1,000 residents.
Sumter County, Florida, led the way, with Whitman County, Washington, following closely behind. Whitman saw the largest population growth from July 1, 2021, to July 1, 2022, among counties and county equivalents based on the recently published population data from the Census Bureau.
Lassen County, California, had the largest negative net domestic migration per 1,000 residents among counties with at least 20,000 people as of July 1 in both 2021 and 2022. That means this county had the largest difference between people moving out than in from elsewhere in the US among these large counties when adjusting for population.
Lots of counties in New York saw negative net domestic migration. That includes Bronx County. This county saw negative net domestic migration of 43.7 per 1,000 people. Queens County, New York, also had a large estimate for negative net domestic migration per 1,000 residents among large counties.
