“Sex symbols don’t go to Princeton!” Brooke Shields admits she was “very lonely” in college

Brooke Shields has spoken about the loneliness she felt during her time at Princeton and how students actively avoided her on campus.

The 57-year-old Endless Love actress revealed during the first episode of her new documentary on Hulu, Lovely baby.

Brooke took a break from her successful film career in the 1980s to study at Princeton University, where she majored in Romance Language and Literature, with an emphasis on French literature, graduating with honors in 1987.

At first, the actress, who called her mother five times a day, said she found the transition difficult.

She was so lonely, so lonely. And people tried to be so nice, and just tried to give me my space,” Brooke revealed.

So I said, “I don’t want space, I want to go home or I want friends. Please don’t respect me, please don’t respect my space.”

So I went from people bashing me, to people avoiding me completely, and then I’m going to miss my mom. We talked about it in interviews, that the umbilical cord was never cut.

Brooke described how she had a preconceived notion of what the college would be.

“Education was kind of the only thing my father was satisfied with.”

Friend Isobel Coleman said that many students “diligently avoid” Brock.

“Princeton attracts a certain type, and everyone thinks a lot of themselves and they’re like, ‘Well, I’m not going to be attracted to this circus,’” Isobel said.

Brock also explained that it was unusual for a Hollywood starlet to go to college in the 1980s, with cultural psychologist Jeffrey Alexander saying, “At that time, of course, she was really breaking glass because a sex symbol doesn’t go.” to Princeton.

She remembered calling her mother, Terry, and telling her she wanted to come home.

But Terry remained firm and said to her, “Honey, you will never forgive yourself.” You will be very mad at yourself if you don’t follow up on this.

Eventually finding her feet, Brooke joined the Princeton Triangle Club, described as “the oldest touring musical comedy troupe in the country.”

She added, “I found all the guys and girls really creative, we just wanted to do comedy and music, and it was fun.”

At Princeton, Brooke is also beginning to find her voice and her independence, and the more pressure she gets, the more resistant she becomes.

“The more scrutiny and public criticism I get, the more I think: ‘Hell no, you’re not taking this from me,’” she said.

“It kind of turned into this big rebellion.”

Brooke said before attending college that she would wait for her mother or someone else to tell her what was important.

The directors never asked me what I thought of a character, but I learned that I could think for myself. This also does not appeal to Hollywood, an actress who can think of herself.

She also dated fellow actor Dean Cain during her time at Princeton, and recounted how she ran ‘naked’ from the room after losing her virginity at the age of 22.

In the documentary, the 57-year-old said she felt “remorse” about the way she first had sex with Dean, and that he was “much more comfortable with the sexual part” of their relationship than she was.

Brooke laughed as she recalled the first time she and Dean slept when she was a junior in college.

When we finally had sex, I immediately ran out of the room, ran down the hall naked, and just ran. She said: I didn’t know where I was going.

He ran after me with the quilt and grabbed me and said, “Where are you going?” He said, “I’m not going anywhere, I’m not going to leave you, you’re the same person.” He got it right away and I just cried.

“I wanted to jump into personal relationship and love and commitment,” she said in the documentary. “We had to teach each other about each other.”

The Blue Lagoon actress also addressed the controversy surrounding the Calvin Klein ads she shot when she was 16 years old.

In the commercial, one of several ads Brooke shot with legendary photographer Richard Avedon for Calvin Klein, the then-teenager was dressed in blue jeans and said, “You want to know what’s going on between me and my Calvins?” nothing.’

“I jumped at the opportunity because it was acting, it was just an exercise in literary memorization and allusion and I had to be smart to do it,” Brock said in the new documentary.

“I’ve never had anything that had an idea that it was sexual…that’s pretty naive.”

“If they had intended the double interpretation, they wouldn’t have explained it to me,” Brooke previously told Vogue.

It didn’t bother me. It just didn’t kind of come to my mind because it’s an overtly sexual thing, sexual in any way.
