A woman was found buried alive in Brazil after being exhumed from a cemetery

At least two men have been arrested after a 36-year-old woman was found buried alive in a cemetery in Brazil. The victim, a mother of four, was beaten and dragged from her home by the attackers on March 28 and abandoned inside a cemetery in the Visconde do Rio Branco Municipal Cemetery in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais. She survived underground for about 10 hours before gravediggers noticed fresh cement and blood near the grave. Their suspicions are confirmed when they hear a woman crying for help from within. The Visconde do Rio Branco Civil Police held a press conference on Tuesday to announce the concerns, which occurred Saturday night in the municipalities of São Giraldo and Viçosa. Police Chief Diego Candian said the unnamed defendants, aged between 20 and 22, were planning to flee to Rio de Janeiro after their horrific crime. The woman told police she was assaulted after she “abusived” the drugs and weapons she had hidden for them in her home. The two young men had been arrested in the past for smuggling weapons and drugs. They will be held in pretrial detention for up to 30 days. Authorities are looking for a third suspect. “There is still an individual on the run,” Police Chief Douglas Muto said. “We are still constantly working so that we can locate this person and make an arrest as quickly as possible and then leave him at the disposal of justice.” The suspects broke into her home on March 28 and assaulted her husband, who managed to escape. Then they managed to get it out of the house, take it to the cemetery and stuff it inside the grave. The woman noticed that she was stuck in the grave after she regained consciousness. Cemetery workers heard her weak cries for help and immediately called the police before an emergency rescue team pulled her from the burial site. Henrik Slade, director of Joao Batista Hospital, said the woman had a head injury and was at risk of losing a finger. “The possibility of vascular surgery and possibly amputation is being evaluated,” Slade said, adding that the victim is in intensive care and is improving but may undergo vascular surgery.
