A 147-year-old stained glass window depicting Jesus as a colored person has been unveiled at a Rhode Island church.

Hadley Arnold, a Harvard-trained art historian, claims to have spotted the portrait — made of brown glass — in the 12-foot windows years after he purchased St. Mark’s Church in Warren.

The image had previously gone unnoticed because the congregation did not realize it was meant to be Jesus.

The image shows the Son of God speaking to two women – believed to be Mary and Martha – who also appear as people of colour.

Produced in 1877, the window may have been the first public work ever to depict Jesus as a person of colour.

Arnold told Providence Journal.

Since then it has been visited by art historians, architecture historians and religious scholars.

Among those who visited him was Virginia Ragoin, a professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts.

“This is a radical statement about the fundamental equality of people, and today we are fortunate to have this record,” she said Providence Journal.

Many of the other windows in the church use milky white glass – suggesting that the transition to brown was intentional.

Furthermore, the windows are unusual as they depict Bible stories in detail.

Hadley Arnold, a Harvard-trained art historian, claims to have discovered the image—made of brown glass—in the 12-foot windows years after he purchased St. Mark’s Church in Warren.

One shows Mary and Martha – the sisters of Lazarus – hosting Jesus in their home.

The second picture shows Jesus speaking to a Samaritan woman collecting water.

At that time men and women were not supposed to speak in public.

Arnold referred to the piece as the “rebel window”.
