New York Red Bulls player Dante Fanzier apologizes for racist remarks at San Jose Earthquakes game

The New York Red Bulls, manager Gerhard Strober and forward Dante Vanzier issued statements following a racist incident that occurred in Saturday’s game against the San Jose Earthquakes.

During the match a brawl led to a long stoppage that led to an incredible 21 minutes of extra time at the end of the match.

After the game ended, San Jose player Jeremy Ibobisi said he heard a racist remark – and footage of the game showed players on both sides reacting by shoving Fanzier away from the scuffle.

Vanzier, who recently arrived from Belgium, took responsibility for what he did, in his statement, saying he would ‘accept any suspension, fine and counseling’ as a result of his punishment.

None of the statements said whether VanZier would be available for selection in the weekend’s home game against the Houston Dynamo.

“I want to sincerely apologize to the Earthquake players,” Fanzier’s statement read. I will do everything I can to be part of the change that needs to happen in this sport and in our world.

I also want to apologize to my teammates, coaches, organization and fans. I made a mistake and I will take all the necessary steps to grow.

I take full responsibility for my actions. Although I did not intend to cause any harm or offense in my language, I know I did, and therefore I am deeply sorry. I will accept any suspension, fine and advice given by the Football League and the club.

I will use this opportunity to improve myself, reflect and dedicate my time and efforts to working with organizations that address racial injustice.

A statement issued by the club also directly apologized for the incident, calling the words and inaction “unforgivable”.

“The New York Red Bulls sincerely apologize for the unacceptable events that occurred Saturday night during the game with the San Jose Earthquakes,” the statement read.

The words and inaction were unwarranted, and we believe there was absolutely no place for them.

We always strive to create an environment that is inclusive and anti-racist. Our organization is committed to providing resources to further educate our players and staff, as well as rebuild trust within our community.

Furthermore, a statement has been released from director Gerhard Strober. However, his statement did not include the words “apology” or “sorry”, although the inaction was addressed directly in his club’s statement.

With the incident occurring, and the long layoff still in progress, Earthquakes coach Luchi Gonzalez said he “was adamant about pointing out that the player should not be on the field any longer”.

Despite this, Vanzier was not taken off the field until the 87th minute.

Stroper’s statement read: “During our game on Saturday, I made a decision that I thought was the best given the information I had at that moment.

“While there was a lot of uncertainty at the time, with the information I know now, the right decision was to immediately remove Dante Vanzeir from the game.”
