Legendary Australian comedian Barry Humphries – best known for his role as Dame Edna Everage – has been hospitalized in an ‘unresponsive state’.
Humphries, 89, was found unconscious at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney on Thursday night, his family reported, ABC Radio Sydney reported.
He was hospitalized earlier this week after post-operative complications following a fall in February.
His family, including his four children, rushed to his hospital bed.
The entertainer — known for his drag alter ego Dame Edna Everage — issued a jovial statement on Wednesday through his publicist thanking fans and well-wishers.
“Barry would like to thank everyone for the support and best wishes he has received, but he wants more and more,” the statement read.
His wife Elizabeth Spender also told 9News that he was “doing well.”
It has been revealed that there are “serious” concerns for the artist during his hospital visit The sun.
Entertainment journalist Peter Ford told Channel Seven’s Sunrise that Barry’s health had ‘deteriorated’ in the week before his hospitalisation.
“I think Barry has a fighting spirit and he won’t give up easily,” he added.
On Wednesday, Peter had said ‘things are hard’ and asked fans to send their love to the man who has made them laugh for decades.
“At the moment, Barry is in a serious condition, but he is being kept comfortable. He is surrounded by family,” he said.
Throughout his career, Barry has met and charmed most of the royal family, from the late Queen Mother to King Charles III.
He has been touring around the country for the past year, including in the UK, where he spent much of his time touring for his one-man show.
