An Australian broker arrested on the French Riviera for the suspected attempted murder of his wife had previously been a diamond merchant in Dubai.
Daily Mail Australia can reveal that Damien Carew and Anna Polianskaya-Carew lived in the United Arab Emirates for several years, where they owned a “gigantic” house in the exclusive Palm Islands.
The couple moved to Monaco about nine years ago and were renting a villa in nearby La Turbie when Carew was arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of the mother of his two children.
Local media reported that 43-year-old Carew, who is originally from Melbourne, called emergency services last Wednesday following an incident involving his wife.

She had lost consciousness and was in a coma while Carew was taken into custody and their children were cared for by her family, police said. NEWS.MC English language news website.
Daily Mail Australia confirmed on Friday afternoon that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has offered its support.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is in contact with French authorities regarding the arrest of an Australian man in France and stands ready to provide consular assistance if requested,” a spokesman said.
Such assistance may include prison visits, liaising with local authorities, assisting in communicating with family members and providing lists of local lawyers.
Carew, who attended Melbourne’s prestigious St. Kevin’s College, was released from a prison in Paris in January and was under “judicial scrutiny” in connection with a money laundering case.
Daily Mail Australia understands that Carew has struggled since being released from prison and Russian-born Ms Polianskaya-Carew has been suicidal in recent months.
The couple met on a beach in Greece when she was a teenager. They got engaged in 2011 and married two years later on the Riviera at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.
Ms. Polianskaya-Carew, 33, worked as a brand manager for Ibrahim Zein jewelry at the Stardust boutique in Monaco’s Hotel de Paris, according to her Linkedin profile.
A friend of the couple said Carew had been struggling since being released from prison in January and that Russian-born Ms Polianskaya-Carew (above) had told friends in recent months that she was suicidal
Carew is described as a real estate agent and the pair were once directors of Sterling Estates International, which was registered as a company in London and Monaco.
The couple’s current circumstances are a stark contrast to what seemed to have been an idyllic life before.
A friend said that Carew and Ms Polianskaya-Carew, who moved to Monaco permanently to settle in late 2014, had made the most of Dubai.
“They lived the good life,” said the friend. ‘They lived in a gigantic villa on the Palm Islands.
“They were a very good looking couple, as you can see. They clearly had a very flashy life. They live in Monaco, they’ve been to Dubai.’
While in the UAE, Ms. Polianskaya-Carew worked for US commercial real estate company Jones Lang LaSalle and her husband was involved in both real estate and diamond trading.
After moving to Monaco, where Mrs. Polianskaya-Carew’s mother lives, the couple had a daughter, and then a son.

The friend was stunned to learn that Carew had been arrested because of what happened to his wife.
“I was floored,” the friend said. ‘I could not believe it. I don’t think Damien would hurt her like that.
“They are the most generous of people, kind of headstrong, but really down to earth. They are just so nice. It’s just so sad. My heart breaks for the children.’
Since Carew had been in prison, Mrs. Polianskaya-Carew had become increasingly depressed, telling friends that she had made several attempts to take her own life.
Neighbors said they had not heard anything on the day of the alleged incident, but confirmed that police had visited the home.
Prosecutors have opened an investigation into attempted murder with aggravated circumstances and intentional violence against a spouse.
Monaco-Matin reported that Carew was represented by a Paris lawyer when he appeared before a judge who ordered that he be detained.
