Scottsdale, Arizona (SPD) — On April 16, 2023, around 6:50 p.m., Scottsdale Police Officers arrived in the area of Granite Reef Rd and Cypress St. and contacted 26-year-old Isaiah Curtis in front of a residence and saw that he was armed with a pistol.
Curtis ignored verbal commands from officers and ended up shooting at police. In response, both officers fired their duty weapons, striking the suspect, who collapsed in the driveway of the residence.
Officers moved up to the suspect and began life-saving efforts that included applying chest seals, and tourniquets and performing CPR. At 7:00 p.m., paramedics arrived and attempted further life-saving measures. Curtis did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:10 p.m.
The officers involved have been placed on Post-Critical Incident Leave while the internal and criminal investigation continues, which is standard for all officer-involved shootings. Both officers are assigned to patrol. One has 1.5 years of service, and the other has 3 years of service with the department.
