A woman has successfully ‘taken out’ thousands after revealing the hidden amount of filth that could be lurking in your kitchen sink.

Home designer Em, from Perth who goes by the username stilettos_and_bricks, shared her step-by-step guide that involves removing a gutter to expose the disgusting buildup of filth underneath.

But after a video showing the process went viral, plumbers warned against the process because it could damage the seal and cause leaks.

Em wrote, “I do this every two to three months to remove buildup and avoid any unpleasant odors from the tub.”

“Make sure your plumbing pipes are secured once you’ve removed the drain section before turning on the water.”

Em, from Perth, shared her step-by-step guide that involves removing a gutter to expose the disgusting buildup of filth underneath. But plumbers cautioned against this process because it could damage the seal and cause a leak

In a video, Em’s tub looked clean from the surface but underneath there was an alarming amount of food and water buildup.

I started by using the upper drain “plug” insert to loosen the inner screw and removing the drain to clean it.

The clip was filled with mixed comments, with some thanking Em for sharing the “hack” and others saying, “Never do that.”

One person wrote: “Don’t do this. You will break the seal underneath. I just did and regret it so much!!!”

Another person wrote: “A good way to mess up your kitchen by creating a slow leak that you won’t notice until it’s too late.”

‘That’s how I flooded the cupboard under the sink,’ a third confessed.

Once the drain was cleared, I used a number of common cleaning ingredients to remove buildup – Including white vinegar, baking soda and dishwashing liquid.

M poured one cup of white vinegar down the dirty drain and cleaned it with an electric brush.

Then mix a paste of dishwashing liquid and bicarb soda and scrub all over the parts. She said it goes great with this mixture.

Equal parts baking soda and vinegar were poured down the drain and left for 10 minutes to remove unpleasant odors.

Hot water follows to wash off any foam.

Obviously, this “hack” is best left to the professionals.
