LEMONT, ill. – According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, a petroleum plant in south suburban Lemont experienced a fire and explosion on Tuesday morning that resulted in the death of one person and the injury of another.
The explosion occurred in an asphalt tank at the Seneca Petroleum facility. The injured person was taken to a hospital for medical attention.
According to ABC7, both individuals were M&J Industrial Services contractors working on-site.
The fire has been brought under control, and fire personnel stated that there is no indication that any hazardous substances were released, and there is no threat to public safety.
Seneca Petroleum has not previously received any OSHA violations at the site.
The cause of the blast is under investigation.
